The Dangers of Red-Light Accidents

June 15, 2020 by Robbins Law, P.C.

Accidents occurring at intersections, especially those involving those cause by drivers running red lights, are very serious accidents. Injuries can be severe and life-altering and are often fatal. Driver negligence is the most common cause of red-light accidents, but poorly designed intersections, malfunctioning traffic signals, and defective vehicles can also cause these horrific crashes. If you or someone you love has been injured in a red light accident, you need the help of an experienced Georgia car accident lawyer.

Avoiding Red Light Crashes

Although other drivers have the responsibility of obeying traffic signals and observing your right-of-way, you can’t count on the to do so, and there may be something going on that you are not aware of to prevent them from it, such as brake failure or a health event. The best way to stay out of a red-light accident is to stay on your toes and be on the lookout for red light runners. Here are a few tips to keep in mind, that might save your life:

  • Always keep in mind any road conditions that could make it difficult for other vehicle to stop, such as slick roads or standing water that can cause hydroplaning
  • Don’t rush to hit the gas the second the light turns green. Even when you’re in a hurry, take the time to look around for cars that are still trying to get through the intersection, or that aren’t able to stop in time.
  • Look at the other drivers to make sure they are not gearing up to go. You’re looking for signs that the traffic signal is malfunctioning and you both have the green light.
  • If there are no cars, look beyond the intersection itself, to see if someone is flying toward the intersection with no plans to stop or the inability to do so.
  • Don’t try to beat the yellow light. When the light is yellow, slow down so you’re not suddenly braking and getting rear-ended, or having to fly through the light just as it turns red.
  • Stay aware and pay attention, even while you are waiting at the light. It may be long and boring, but it is not the time to be checking your phone or texting.
