Between hazardous road conditions, distracted drivers, and careless drivers, it is easy to find yourself the victim of an auto accident. In order to reduce your risk of getting into an accident, it is important to always engage in safe driving practices. The health and safety of you, your passengers, and other drivers on the road are too important to overlook this important aspect of driving.
By following these safe driving tips, you can go a long way towards preventing avoidable auto accidents:
- Look ahead – Always remember to look at least five car lengths ahead of you at all times. This will enable you to recognize potential hazards on the road with enough time to react accordingly.
- Drive the speed limit – Speeding is one of the most common causes of auto accidents. By driving the speed limit, it will be easier to maneuver your vehicle through tight turns or other difficult conditions, and it will give you the necessary time to observe and react to adverse conditions in front of you.
- Maintain a safe following distance – You should always maintain at least a four second space between you and the vehicle in front of you so that you can avoid a collision if the other vehicle stops short or gets into an accident. When driving at night or during bad weather, you should leave an even greater distance.
- Seatbelts save lives– Always wear your seatbelt when you are driving or are a passenger in a vehicle.
- Don’t use your cell phone – Avoid talking or texting on your cell phone while driving. Cell phone usage is one of the most common driver distractions resulting in auto accidents. Studies have shown that cell phone usage while driving is almost as dangerous as driving while intoxicated.
- Avoid other drivers’ blind spots– Always make sure that you are not in another driver’s blind spot. If you must enter a driver’s blind spot while passing another vehicle, be aware that the driver will not be able to see you.
- Keep your eyes moving – Never keep your eyes fixated on a stationary spot. Instead, make sure they are constantly moving up and down the road and from side to side so that you can detect any hazards that may arise.
- Check your mirrors frequently– Check your rear and side view mirrors on a regular basis so that you are aware of what other drivers are doing behind you.
- Leave yourself an out – Always make sure there is a place on the road where you can maneuver your vehicle to avoid a sudden obstacle.
