How to Prepare for a Summer Road Trip

August 30, 2021 by Administrator

The summer of 2021 looks to be another big year for travel in the US. Families across the country embark on road trips this time of year, leading to increased traffic volume and a higher risk for getting involved in a car accident. At the law firm of Laurie Robbins, we want you and your loved ones to stay safe on the road. Here are some of the top summer driving safety tips:

  • Prepare for the road trip. Stock your car with an emergency first aid kit, high calorie snacks, drinking water, a blanket, road flares, a spare tire, a tire jack, and other essentials. In advance of the trip, schedule your car for any service that needs to be completed, such as an oil change, new tires, new battery, etc. Plan your route ahead of time, including where you will stop for breaks or overnight, if applicable.
  • Buckle up. Make sure everyone in the vehicle is properly buckled before starting the car. Seatbelt use has been shown to reduce the severity of injuries and prevent death in the event of a motor vehicle crash.
  • Stay alert. Driving requires your full attention. Keep phones away and out of reach when you’re driving. Ask passengers to handle navigation and texting. Distracted driving is involved in thousands of accident fatalities annually, so it’s really important to keep your eyes, hands, and mind on the task of driving.
  • Don’t underestimate fatigue. When you’re drowsy driving, not only are you more likely to nod off, but your reasoning and reaction time are impaired as well. You are less able to recognize and respond to events on the road. Prioritize getting a full night of sleep the night before, and find a safe place to pull over and rest if you find yourself getting drowsy behind the wheel. No amount of coffee, loud music, or wind in your face will replace a full night of rest.

These safety tips may go a long way toward making your trip a safer one.

If you or a loved one has been injured in a crash caused by someone else’s negligence, please call the Atlanta law firm of experienced accident attorney Laurie Robbins, at 404-252-8117, for a free consultation.
